OFO Ottawa Convention Field Trips (Sept 26 -27) in Far Eastern Ontario (FEO), N. Wheatear (22 Sept) in FEO 50 km circle et plus...

Hi faithful followers of this blog,

We and the following 3 other co-leaders, Rémy, Langis and Hervé, showed 30 or so out-of-town birders, once on Friday and again on Saturday, the following sites of FEO in chronological order : the Alfred lagoons, the Alfred Bog boardwalk, the St-Isidore lagoons, the Laflèche dump fields and finally the Casselman lagoons. In all we saw 76 species; our best day was Friday with 70 species.  

Our best birds were 2 CACKLING GEESE in Casselman; it was one of our 21 species of swimming birds.  We had 5 species of raptors of which BALD EAGLE (photo attached was taken while scouting on Friday) was our best. This 1.5 year old individual (+ or -) is called a Basic I (White Belly I) Bald Eagle; note the whitish belly that contrasts with the dark breast.  The saw-tooth trailing edge of the wing is due to a mixture of longer juvenile and shorter replacement secondary feathers.

Because shorebird habitat was lacking elsewhere in the Ottawa area we may have been the group with most shorebird species with a SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER and 2 GOLDEN PLOVERS being our best.  Eight (8) of our 10 species were found at the St-Isidore sewage lagoons where the shorebird habitat was excellent.  We did manage to find 4 of Ontario's 5 regularly-occurring plovers.  The only plover we did not get was Piping Plover.  LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was the best of 5 species of gulls.  LINCOLN and WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS were the best of our 6 sparrow species.  Another good species was a single RUSTY BLACKBIRD and 2 SANDHILL CRANES at Alfred.  Thanks to all of you who contacted the leaders before the trip with your good sightings.

I have not added much to the blog in the past 5 months.  Much of my time has been devoted to completing the online list of the birds of FEO. Click on link in ''Sites Intéressants'' section on right (title below)

• ANNOTATED and ILLUSTRATED LIST of the Birds of Far Eastern Ontario and of neighbouring southwestern Quebec and northern New-York.

I expect to add another 500 photos and to be finished (1st draft) just after Christmas. So far about 300 species have been found in the 50-km circle. See map of circle here:

I believe Bruce Di Labio and Bernie Ladouceur have seen most of the 300 species in this FEO 50-km Birding Circle. My list is not anywhere close to 300.

If you are familiar with the new SmugMug and have time, I need help transferring my old SmugMug to my new SmugMug. Hope to hear from you soon ;-)

I have also been de-cluttering my house ;-) If you have tips to help me de-clutter please send them to me ASAP.  I need all the help I can get. Thanks to Christine Trudeau-Brunet and to Lissa Deslandes for their expert advice to date.

Although Christine and I will spending most of 2015 birding in the FEO 50-km birding circle, we plan a week-long trip to Point Pelee in the spring and possibly a trip out east to photograph the missing seabirds for my online annotated list of FEO birds.

Encore des Harfangs des neiges près de Ste-Rose le 16 avril 2014

Hier j'ai observé 5 mâles adultes dont celui-ci, et un sixième individu plus foncé

Notre équipe compte 42 Harfangs des neiges le 30 janvier dernier de Hawkesbury à Winchester

Ensemble, Jacques Bouvier, Christine Trudeau, Brian Morin et Hans van der Zweep ont pu chacun  observer (7 am à 8 pm) 39 harfangs le 30 janvier 2014 don't celui-ci à Ste-Rose. Deux membres du groupe en ont vu 3 autres cette journée là pour un total de 42.  Malheureusement ces 3 harfangs n'ont pas été vus par les autres membres du groupe.  Quel hiver pour voir des Harfangs des neiges dans notre région cette année!!!

Un nombre incroyable de Harfangs des neiges (Snowy Owl) à l'est et au sud d'Ottawa le 24 janvier 2014

Celui-ci (photographié à Hawkesbury) était un des 37 Harfangs des neiges (Snowy Owl) que ''eagle-eyed'' Christine Trudeau et moi avons pu voir le 24 janvier dernier. Ce total impressionant est le résultat d'un travail d'équipe; deux paires de yeux sont mieux qu'une seule :-) .  Nous avons couvert tous les secteurs ouverts à partir de Hawkesbury dans l'est, en passant par Lefaivre, Alfred, Fournier, St-Bernardin, St-Isidore et Casselman.  Nous avons complété notre journée dans le secteur de Winchester-Chesterville au sud d'Ottawa ou le duo de Brian Morin et Hans van der Zweep en avait compté 24 le 21 janvier dernier.  Malheureusement nous en avons  trouvé que 12 dans le secteur de Winchester-Chesterville qui était inconnu de notre part. Une fois qu'on connaîtra mieux la région de Winchester-Chesterville nous croyons que voir 50 harfangs durant une longue journée sera très possible dans l'Est ontarien cet hiver.  Nous avons noté 15 jeunes femelles très foncées et 22 jeunes mâles un peu moins foncés; quelques uns de ceux-ci (ou tous) auraient pus être des femelles adultes qui ressemblent à des jeunes mâles comme deux gouttes d'eau.  Parce que nous n'avons pas vu un seul mâle adulte (d'un blanc immaculé ou presque) nous croyons que les femelles adultes sont aussi complètement absentes ou presque.  Mais c'est de la spéculation de ma part!!

Pie-grièche grise à Fournier le 17 janvier 2014

Bruce Di Labio en a observé neuf le 16 janvier dernier à l'ouest d'Ottawa, un nombre record. La Pie-grièche (Northern Shrike) ici haut que j'ai vue à Fournier est possiblement une de plusieurs qui fera partie d'une éventuelle incursion vers le sud. C'est à voir!! Gardons l'oeil ouvert!!

Cet Harfang des neiges (Snowy Owl) est déjà connu des photographes qui utilisent des souris vivantes pour l'attirer de près pour le photographier au vol. Il n'y avait personne dans les environs lorsque j'ai pris cette photo.

Les résultats de la sortie de ce matin, le 7 décembre 2013, dans la région de Casselman, Moose Creek et Ste-Rose

This is a far cry of the 45 species we got on the trip held on 5 December 2011.  But in all fairness some of us did go all day in 2011 and went as far as the Ottawa area. In 2011 we were 20 people while today we were only 4 in all.  Today was sunny with a bitter cold wind at times, and temperatures ranged from -7 to -4 Celsius.

The bird of the day was Lesser Black-backed Gull (2 adults) near the Moose Creek dump.  Runners up were Bald Eagle (an adult) and Snow Buntings (24).

Christine Trudeau et moi l'avons vu au bassin de Chambly (nous étions au Fort) en compagnie d'une cinquantaine d'autres miroiseurs(euses) au début de l'après-midi du 10 novembre 2013.  C'est un adulte en plumage d'hiver.
Félicitations à Daniel Ouellette d'avoir découvert cette espèce très rare le 9 novembre dernier et merci aussi de l'avoir signalé aux autres très rapidement.
