On Sunday 26 July, 12 intrepid members of the Cornwall and Area Birders Club went on a boat outing along the St. Lawrence River with five Lunker Club members (fishermen) who graciously provided the transportation.
We were on the water for about 4 hours; the trip brought us around several islands, mostly in QC.
We travelled east towards the Little Colquhoun Island where we saw several terns and gulls.
Then we headed to the north side of l'Île Saint-Régis where we spotted an adult Bald Eagle (Pygargue à tête blanche) perched in a tree (see photo), a 2nd-year Bald Eagle (not a juvenile/1st-year as first claimed) and some Great Blue Herons (Grand Héron).
We then circulated around Dickerson Island where we saw a few more birds including our third Bald Eagle, aged 4 or 5 years old.
The next destination was the famous Dodens Island where we observed Double-crested Cormorants (Cormoran à aigrettes) (100), Great Egret (Grande Aigrette) (30), Black-crowned Night-Heron (Bihoreau gris) (about 30). Someone may have also seen a Green Heron. All were very impressed by all the birds on this island.
We then headed to shallow waters near l'Île du Canal where we got stuck temporarily...here we saw Black Terns (Guifette noire), Mallards (Canard colvert), Redheads (Fuligule à tête rouge) and Pied-billed Grebes (Grèbe à bec bigarré).
We ended the trip after going along the south side of l'Île Saint-Régis where we observed Wild Turkey (Dindon sauvage), Great Blue Herons, more Bald Eagles and some swallows.
Afterwards we all enjoyed a delicious potluck lunch on Pilon Island at Mark and Pat Kaddie's cottage where we chatted about all the interesting sightings encountered while on the water.
At last count we had identified about 43 bird species. Bob Scranton, Hans or Christine will likely pass along the complete bird list.
Thanks Mark for taking us in your boat! Cliquez sur une photo pour l'agrandir.
